If you want to make friends, you first need to put yourself out there somehow in order to meet people. Friends seldom come knocking on your door, in which you have done here. That is the first step. Second step is to be forward with your profile, description of who you are and what you think and a self realized opinion helps others get the basics and decide whether you would be a potential candidate as a friend.
Whether their are commonalities between you and them is a huge factor in relationships. Differences are key as well. It puts a bit of a twist in the often common place of each other. Creates an atmosphere of interest and curious wondering. = )
You don't necessarily need to have a lot of common interests with people in order to make friends with them. In fact, some of the most rewarding friendships are between two people who don't have much in common at all, but if you like a specific topic, try searching for just a few more groups that would not normally interest you. This reveals that you have a common interest in others as well.
Socialize with people. Pick out some headlines of people you do not know, click, read and comment. This broadens the horizon of clicking in with others of like and unlike interests.
I am not "telling" you what to do, it is ultimately your choice, just some sound advice to store away in that Life Chest we all have. = )
